Luther Armstrong, age 83, a beloved and longstanding resident of Conway and formerly of Fort Smith, AR, passed away peacefully at his residence on July 31st, 2023. Born on July 3, 1940, in Fort Smith, he was a proud graduate of Northside High School. Luther dedicated four years of his life to serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962, receiving an honorable discharge.
After his military service, Luther held a supervisory position at Arkla Gas and Electric, where he worked diligently for many years. Outside of work, Luther embraced a diverse range of hobbies, including his love for golf, a penchant for smooth jazz, and an unwavering fondness for the music of his favorite group, Earth Wind and Fire. He found joy in expressing himself through drawing, cherished his beach outings, and relished the simple pleasure of riding waves and indulging in his favorite chocolate shakes from Sonic.
Luther's enthusiasm for sports was evident, as he played softball with the Boozers, an over 35 team, enjoyed flag football, and took immense pride in coaching and watching his children and grandchildren participate in various sports. Arkansas football held a special place in his heart, and he was thrilled to attend a Razorback home game with one of his grandsons. Moreover, Luther had an enduring passion for the Dallas Cowboys, unwavering in his support for the team.
Luther is survived by his loving children: Dotty Turner of San Diego, CA; Debby Tipton of Little Rock; and John Armstrong Jr. of Fort Smith, AR. Additionally, he leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Brooke, John III, Joanna, Brittany, Cody, and Bella Armstrong, as well as five great-grandchildren. His sister, Mandy Jones of Birmingham, AL, also mourns his loss. Luther was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cindy Armstrong. They shared a beautiful journey together, marrying in 1958 and enjoying thirty years of happiness until her passing in 1989.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Luther's life on Sunday, January 15, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Bibleway Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 8245 Baseline Road, Ft Smith, AR. Luther Armstrong will forever be remembered as a devoted family man, a patriotic Marine, a sports enthusiast, and a man of varied interests, leaving behind a legacy of love, joy, and cherished memories.
