Burial in a National Cemetery

Eligible veterans can be buried in a national cemetery at no cost, which includes a gravesite, grave opening and closing, perpetual care, and a government-issued headstone or marker.

Military Funeral Honors

Veterans are entitled to military funeral honors, which include the folding and presentation of the U.S. flag to the next of kin, along with the ceremonial playing of "Taps."

Government-Issued Headstone or Marker

The VA provides a headstone, marker, or medallion at no cost for eligible veterans, regardless of burial in a national or private cemetery, as a lasting tribute.

Gravesite Maintenance

For veterans buried in a national cemetery, the government provides perpetual care of the gravesite, ensuring it is maintained with dignity and respect at no cost.

Presidential Memorial Certificate

The VA offers a Presidential Memorial Certificate, signed by the current president, to honor the memory of an eligible veteran. Multiple copies are available for family members.
